Gambling became linked with organized crime sometime in the very early 20th Century. This surprised no-one, as that is often the result when something suffers from prohibition. When gambling was reluctantly banned in Las Vegas in 1911 the change in laws stopped the ringing of the jackpot bells for barely three weeks. That is how long it took for underground gambling spots to get set up and throw their secret doors open to the public. Even once the laws were changed the involvement of gangsters with gambling seemed destined to remain.
